Divorce After 50: Why Split After All Those Years? (VIDEO)

The news that Danny DeVito and Rhea Perlman were getting divorced after decades of marriage came as a surprise to many people, and forced them to wonder why a growing number of post-50 couples are deciding not to stay with each other into their sunset years.

HuffPost Live host Janet Varney hosted a discussion of this phenomenon recently with a panel of guests, including Lola Barnett who said she and her ex-husband seemed like "the perfect couple" to outsiders, but that ultimately "no one knows what's going on with [another couple's] relationship."

Barnett blamed drugs for their eventual split.

"We were both into recreational drugs on a regular basis, and it led to a lot of bad decisions on our part, which ultimately broke down the honor and the trust and respect we had for each other," she told Varney. "My belief is when you don't have a strong foundation, then everything else just falls apart. And it really did."

On the bright side, Barnett says her life has "blossomed" since getting divorced, in part because she married and had a child so young (at 17) that she never really got to know herself as an adult.

"It took a couple years just for me to get to know myself," she said. "Over the last two years, I think I've even blossomed more. Becoming more comfortable in my skin. Becoming the strong, confident, powerful woman I am. And I love it. I truly love it."

Coaching highlights from coaching Columbia Business School ...

In the context of the lessons from coaching Columbia Business School students in leadership, I?ve mostly written about the value of 360-degree feedback processes and reports and how to use them.

Their shortcomings, costs, and problems are mostly obvious, but I?ll cover them anyway since I?ve covered so much about them. I?ll include ones that don?t apply to MBA candidates, despite the context here. I?ll try to mention how to avoid or work around problems too.

First, 360-feedback reports cost a lot, and not just money ? also resources like time and relationships. Large, established companies with dedicated HR departments may already have resources to overcome them, but that doesn?t help the rest of us.

Since you usually have to hire an outside company or coach to administer them (see below), you have to spend money.

They take time from the schedules of you, your evaluators, and whoever administers them to administer and interpret your results.

They can take value from relationships with outsiders if you ask clients and other colleagues to report on them just from the time they take. How you respond or interpret feedback can affect relationships too.

Two main shortcomings of the reports affect feedback in general. As evaluations, they look at the past, which you can?t change. Since they ask people to evaluate, and people often feel uncomfortable communicating negative evaluations, you never know how biased they are.

Reports often overcome these shortcomings with qualitative feedback sections. Personally, I recommend feedforward as an effective, free, and relationship-building way to overcome them.

You usually need other people to administer the reports to maintain privacy and keep key personnel from the distraction of administration.

You usually need yet another person to help review and give an outside perspective on the person being evaluated.

For all the value and direction they give, the reports do not intrinsically motivate. Many people never act on their reports, even if they intend to. So you may want yet another person to help motivate and coach people to act on the reports.

For students taking a leadership class, having to take the rest of the course overcomes at least some of these issues. Large corporations with HR departments that regularly administer the reports can help too.

The large amount of information these reports give can also cause problems.

One is overconfidence: you may feel you know everything about yourself you need to change, forgetting that they only give a snapshot in time. Also, however much 360 degrees sounds like all directions, the external world changes all the time and you may miss many important directions.

Another is feeling like if some information and analysis helps some, more information and analysis will help more, sometimes called analysis paralysis. After you get the report, you have to act.

I haven?t exhausted all the shortcomings and problems, nor offered all the solutions and workarounds to overcome them, but I think I?ve covered the main ones.

Saudi rights group says Iraq mistreats Saudi inmates: paper

DUBAI (Reuters) - A Saudi rights group has accused Iraqi authorities of deliberately mistreating Saudi inmates, a Saudi newspaper said on Thursday, highlighting lingering tensions between the two Arab countries.

Al-Watan, a privately-owned Saudi daily, quoted an unnamed official at the National Society for Human Rights as saying that Saudi Arabian prisoners in Iraq are "treated differently from other Arab inmates for no reason other than they are Saudis".

"Security and administrative" obstacles had been obstructing its representatives or the Red Cross from visiting some nearly 60 Saudi prisoners held in Iraq, it cited the source as saying.

An Iraqi Justice Ministry spokesman denied the charges.

"These allegations are incorrect and baseless. We refuse them completely," the spokesman, Haider Al-Saadi, told Reuters.

"We treat the Iraqi, Saudi and foreign prisoners according to the principles of human rights," he said.

Thousands of Saudis travelled to Iraq to fight alongside Islamist insurgents after the 2003 U.S.-led invasion of Iraq. Official rights group statistics show that less than 100 Saudis are held in Iraq, but the number is believed to be much higher and could reach hundreds.

Suhaila Zein al-Abidine Hammad, a founder of National Society for Human Rights, one of two rights groups licensed by the Saudi kingdom, said the organisation had been concerned mainly by a move to implement death sentences that had been issued against Saudi nationals held in Iraq.

One of the inmates had been taken to solitary confinement, she said, a sign that he was about to be executed.

Hammad said some of those prisoners had received "arbitrary sentences" and that Saudi Arabia had been trying to bring them back homes so they can get fair trials.

Sunni-led Saudi Arabia has had uneasy relations with Iraq since the rise of Shi'ite Muslims to power in Baghdad after the fall of Saddam Hussein in 2003. Iraqi Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki is seen close to Shi'ite power Iran.

Riyadh and Baghdad agreed earlier this year to repatriate Saudi prisoners in what appeared as a signal of improved relations between the two countries. But the prisoner swap deal, which followed Saudi Arabia's naming of an ambassador to Baghdad for the first time since Saddam's 1990 invasion of Kuwait, never materialised.

Differences over a 19-month-old Syrian uprising against President Bashar al-Assad's rule have apparently put the brakes on the improvement in relations between the two countries. While Saudi Arabia backs Syrian rebels, Baghdad's position is seen close to Tehran's stance of refusing to endorse demands for the removal of Assad.

Celebrating Montrealers photographer JJ Levine snapped for Queer Portraits

Montreal photographer JJ Levine

I first came across the photographs of Montreal photographer JJ Levine in the pages of Maisonneuve?s Summer 2012 issue, where Levine parodied prom-style portraits, and then again just days later in the 10?10 Photography Project: 100 Portraits Celebrating LGBT People in the Arts, during Gay Pride at Toronto?s Gladstone Hotel this past summer.

That exhibit featured 10 photographers, but it was Levine?s portraits that caught my eye ? and many of those are also featured in Levine?s solo show Queer Portraits that is currently on display at Montreal?s RATS 9 Gallery in the downtown Belgo Building until November 5.

?I was so excited preparing this show but I?ve been taking these [portraits] since 2006,? says Levine. ?I?ve probably taken over 100 [portraits]? in this series by this point. I photograph my friends and people around me, so there really is no decision-making process [about who to photograph]. It just comes to me when I?m interacting [with others] in my daily life.?

But it?s not as easy as it looks.

As the RATS 9 Gallery press release states, ?Each portrait is taken in a different domestic setting, characterized by saturated colours and often discursive backgrounds. Using professional lighting and a medium format film camera, Levine creates a studio within each home environment, and intentionally places every piece of furniture and object that appears within the frame. These settings are intended to raise questions regarding private queer space as a realm for the development of community and the expression of genders and sexualities that are often marginalized within the public sphere.?

Heady stuff. But when you look at Levine?s portraits, it?s easy to see why the Montreal-based genderqueer artist?s work has been exhibited across Canada, the United States and Europe.

?A selection of my 2012 Queer Portraits have been exhibited in Toronto and in the United Kingdom recently, but never as a larger series, and not yet in Montreal,? Levine says. ?Most of the portraits that I will be showing at RATS 9 Gallery are from the last eight months of my art practice, and many will be exhibited here for the first time. It?s so rare that I have an opportunity to show [my work] in Montreal ? and this is the city where I work and where my models live. Now I can actually share the work with those who give me so much. That?s why I?m so excited about having this show in Montreal.?

Queer Portraits runs at the RATS 9 Gallery on the 5th floor of the Belgo Building (372 Ste Catherine Street West, suite 530) until Nov. 5. The gallery is open Tuesday through Saturday from noon to 6 p.m.

Race, Income Tied to Late Colon Cancer Diagnoses, Study Finds ...

WEDNESDAY Oct. 17, 2012 -- In the United States, 29 percent of people with colon cancer are diagnosed after an emergency, such as an obstruction or perforation of the bowel, according to new research.

A study from the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center at Dallas also revealed that blacks and those in high-poverty areas are more likely than others to be diagnosed with colon cancer in an emergency situation. The researchers noted when cancer diagnoses are delayed until an emergency arises, the risk for complications and death increases.

"Overall, there are high rates of emergency presentation of colorectal cancer in the United States," said Sandi Pruitt, assistant professor in the university's department of clinical sciences.

"Screening for colorectal cancer using tests including colonoscopy is recommended for all healthy, asymptomatic adults starting at age 50," Pruitt said. "But these high rates of emergencies indicate that there are multiple missed opportunities for screening."

For the study, the researchers analyzed national data collected between 1992 and 2005 on adults aged 66 and older with advanced colon cancer.

Of the nearly 89,000 patients identified, 29 percent were diagnosed following an emergency. Of these, about 81 percent required hospitalization -- 32 percent because of bowel obstructions and 4 percent with bowel perforations.

After taking factors such as the stage of cancer and overall health into account, the researchers noted that black people were 29 percent more likely to be diagnosed with colon cancer in an emergency and those living in poverty-stricken areas were 10 percent more likely to be diagnosed under these circumstances.

"We already know that African-Americans and economically disadvantaged populations face an increased risk for death from colorectal cancer," Pruitt said. "In future research, we will attempt to understand how emergency presentation of colorectal cancer contributes to racial and economic disparities in death from colorectal cancer."

Colon cancer is the fourth most common cancer among U.S. adults. It is estimated that nearly 52,000 people will die of it this year.

The study was scheduled for presentation Wednesday at the annual cancer prevention conference of the American Association for Cancer Research, in Anaheim, Calif.

Data and conclusions presented at meetings are typically considered preliminary until published in a peer-reviewed medical journal.
